Why field development with Multiphase Systems?

Because field development with multiphase pumps is highly profitable. Multiphase pumps reduce the well pressure in the producing zone (FBHP) in the well and thus increase the productivity of the well. By installing a multiphase pump, the respective well is decoupled from the system pressure of the subsequent separator station. Multiphase pumps are installed above ground and are easy to install, operate and maintain. They can also be easily combined with other technologies later on, i.e. borehole pumps can be used, for example.

Why does asset profitability increase with Multiphase Systems?

The main reason for the increased profitability is that German Legacy multiphase pumps significantly improve the productivity of the connected well(s). This is achieved on the one hand by lowering the head pressure and on the other hand by the very high availability of up to 98% and more. This corresponds to approx. 360 days per year on which our multiphase pumps ensure pumping at maximum level and thus productivity.

Our multiphase pumps operate in a very wide working range and can therefore be operated over very long running times and also largely manage without personnel during operation. Furthermore, we also offer leasing models in which the pumps are comprehensively looked after.

The result: maximum output with minimum operating costs, for 20 years and more.

From which point in time can multiphase pumps be successfully deployed?

The use of multiphase pumps is worthwhile from the point at which a well begins to decline in productivity, i.e. at the end of plateau production. As soon as the level of plateau production is determined, planning for the use of multiphase pumps should begin.

Where can multiphase pumps be used profitably?

Multiphase pumps are used as close as possible to boreholes because their purpose is to relieve the respective borehole(s) from the system pressure and to achieve atmospheric conditions at the head of the borehole as far as possible. This results in a significant reduction in well pressure, which leads to increased production from the reservoir.

By how much is production increased by the deployment of multiphase pumps?

The multiphase pump typically generates a differential pressure of Δp = 20…30 bar (which corresponds to 300…450 psi) by which the pressure at the perforation is reduced. Due to the productivity index PI of the reservoir, e.g. 2bbl/psi, the productivity of the well increases according to the factor of differential pressure and PI, for example, by 600…900 BOPD.

Why do multiphase pumps use recirculation?

Multiphase pumps always require a certain amount of liquid. In screw pumps, this ensures that a film of liquid is formed in the gap between the feed screws and the liner, which is necessary for lubrication and pressure build-up.

This enables us to handle even varying fluctuations in the composition of the pumped liquids and gases. When a well is being produced, it can happen that 100 % gas has to be transported at times. To ensure sufficient lubrication, fluid is collected and injected accordingly at these times.

GERMAN LEGACY has developed an innovative multi-phase liquid management system for this purpose, which improves recirculation and minimises the effort required compared to other concepts. Our multiphase pumps are thus suitable for a wide delivery range and very different compositions of the pumped liquid mixtures.

Why use systems and not just pumps?

German Legacy offers complete systems because we want to ensure the safety of the installations. This requires high-level safety equipment. In addition, we ensure maximum availability in all conceivable operating states via our control system and strive to minimise shutdowns. This enables us to recognise changes at an early stage and react to them in a targeted – and timely – manner.

Why do we use safety shut-off valves on our multiphase pumps?

For safety reasons, all GERMAN LEGACY multiphase pump units are equipped with 100% metal-seated, API 6 fireproof shut-off valves. In the event of an accident, it must be ensured that the plant is disconnected from the conveyors and pipelines within the shortest possible time because they contain large quantities of gas under high pressure. Without these safety devices, these quantities of gas could expand via the pump and ignite in the process. As a result, fires and explosions could occur.

Does Germany Legacy also offer local share of production?

GERMAN LEGACY’s concept generally takes local shares into account when supplying multiphase pump systems. For example, base plates, piping and FAT can usually be manufactured or carried out locally. Core components and engineering are provided from Germany. The local share can then also be settled in local currency. However, GERMAN LEGACY remains your contact and the responsible contractor.

Why is multiphase boosting so important?

Multiphase boosting provides increased production by lowering the drill head pressure. In addition, the connected sources are decoupled from the downstream system pressure. This means that individual production can also take place from each borehole. In the process, further measures for increasing the productivity of the respective borehole are individually coordinated.

Multiphase boosting is the first sensible measure for almost every borehole before further artificial lifting measures are used. Multiphase boosting is most effective when its use is considered in the initial planning phase (“Front End Engineering and Design”, FEED). This optimises the flowlines and the profitability of a drilling site over its entire life cycle. Multiphase pumps are then used at the latest towards the end of the plateau production of the respective well.

What do we need in order to create a tailor-made pump design?

In order to be able to optimally design multiphase pumps, GERMAN LEGACY requires information on the current operating and environmental conditions, such as flow rates and pressures, as well as the future data of the respective well. When producing complete fields, also the arrangement of the wells and the current or planned flowlines.

Can the pumps be deployed in different locations?

GERMAN LEGACY multiphase pumps can be used in a wide variety of locations within an oilfield, depending on the specific application. Applications in parallel operation and/or in series are also possible. This engineering is an essential part of the Multiphase Aided Field Development.

Why are so many facilities at a standstill?

Many systems, even those of well-known pump manufacturers, are no longer in operation because they have not been adequately maintained or have not been operated optimally. Multiphase systems have an extremely wide operating range. However, since multiphase pumps are not yet generally used in all oil fields, operators often lack appropriately trained personnel. In addition, poorly designed systems or systems in the wrong places lead to problems that need to be solved.

GERMAN LEGACY therefore offers all customers an operator model in which the customer’s operators are also trained “on the job”, on the installations.

Why are existent pump stations so large?

Many multiphase pumps are installed in the wrong places in the field or are designed on the basis of non-optimal data. Therefore, too large pumps with poor efficiencies are often selected. GERMAN LEGACY’s holistic service enables us to achieve pump installations that often require only 50% of the investment and just as little installed power. On the one hand, the better efficiencies significantly reduce OPEX. In addition, we can generally lower the head pressures to 50 psi or less for higher or longer delivery.

Why so close to the well heads?

Multiphase pumps should be installed as close to the borehole as possible to ensure optimum head pressure drawdown. Even slightly longer flowlines can result in a considerable deterioration of the mode of action.

Questions from the repair department

Just to keep all close

How long do repairs take?

Thanks to our spare parts management, the repair or maintenance of a GERMAN LEGACY multiphase pump only takes up to two days. We recommend and create individual maintenance intervals at which we provide all necessary spare parts in good time. In addition, with appropriately equipped multiphase pumps we can in most cases recognise in good time when unscheduled maintenance is necessary. This avoids repairs, which are usually more difficult to carry out and usually take more time than regular, timely maintenance.

We achieve high availabilities for the operator personnel, which contributes significantly to the achievement of objectives and the avoidance of unscheduled work in the field.

Is there local support for repairs to screw pumps?

German Legacy has a global network of excellently trained and certified pump fitters. These can be called in if necessary or basically supervise the operation of the plant.

Is remote maintenance a possibility?

All plants with a control system have the option of remote diagnostics from the main plant, thus providing operators with important support. Downtime and repair times are greatly reduced because we can usually determine the cause of the fault early on.

How simple is it to install a German Legacy pump in an existing system?

The pumps supplied by us have connection dimensions that correspond to a Bornemann* standard. For other manufacturers, we offer correspondingly adapted units or supplementary adapters. – We speak of “Drop Fit” or also “Plug and Play” because our pumps can usually be easily installed in existing environments without modification.
